Chris Froome won the Tour de France last Sunday. After riding 3,404 kilometres in just under 84 hours, he was awarded the winning yellow jersey – le maillot jaune - on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. As you can see above, he also received a cuddly toy for all his efforts!

The Canadian cyclist, Svein Tuft, was awarded the Lanterne Rouge for finishing last in the Tour, nearly four and a half hours behind the winner. 198 riders started but only 169 riders ended the tour. Of the 29 riders who did not finish, 18 were injured on the road, nine gave up between stages, and two were disqualified for finishing outside the cut-off time.

Born in Kenya and educated in South Africa, Chris Froome took up British citizenship. The Tour de France has now been won by British riders for the last two years. Last year Bradley Wiggins won the tour, with Froome second – this was the first time since the Tour started in 1903 that a Brit had won the Tour. The French are nonplussed about this achievement. The leading French sports newspaper, L'Équipe, often failed to report that Froome was British, preferring to describe him as Kenyan-born. The last time a French rider won the Tour was Bernard Hinault in 1985, though in 1989 the French cyclist, Laurent Fignon, came second to the winner, the American Greg Lemond, by a mere 8 seconds!

After 100 Tours, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain have each worn the yellow jersey five times. Unofficially, Lance Armstrong has won it seven times but his name has been expunged from official records after being caught taking performance-enhancing drugs. The Belgian Eddy Merckx was also caught using drugs but his victories are still officially recognised, and he is widely acclaimed as the best road cyclist in history – you see, there is a famous Belgian!

Should Lance Armstrong’s achievements be resurrected in the official records (even with an asterisk denoting a druggie)?

Though not condoning Lance Armstrong’s actions, I think his achievements should be officially recognised. At least, he was the best in a period when nearly all top road cyclists were taking drugs.
