LE TOUR DE FRANCE

LE TOUR DE FRANCE

Mont Saint-Michel:

Chris Froome, Team Sky:

Nairo Quintana, Movistar Team:

Vincenzo Nibali, Astana:

Romain Bardet, Team Ag2r-La Mondiale:

Le Tour de France has started; I’m now a happy man! Well, I’ll be a relatively happy man until the end of this month when the Tour ends on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Le Grand Depart took place from the stunning island of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy.

Normally I don’t get much mail on this site, but in recent weeks I’ve been inundated with mail asking me to blog about the Tour de France. Slightly reluctantly I will oblige by giving the punters what they want!

The Tour de France is a tough race, arguably one of the toughest sporting events to win. Just imagine having to get on a bike and cycle for up to four hours a day every day for a month with only a couple of rest days thrown in.

The race involves sprints and climbs in cold and hot weather. The cycling teams are all corporate teams now because of the money needed to compete, but when the Tour was first established the teams were country-based teams and France often won. Now corporate, French riders rarely win. Capitalism! Globalisation! Global capitalism!

Teams that want to win the Tour de France, as opposed to individual stages, have to recruit a mix of different types of cyclists to support their team leaders, known as GC (General Classification) riders.

The GC rider is someone who is aiming to complete all the stages of the Tour de France in the fastest time. They have to be good at everything except perhaps at sprinting, but they can’t win alone. The GC rider will need his domestiques.

Domestiques are the cyclists whose sole purpose on the Tour is to support their team leader. They will fetch and carry food and water to their leader, shield their leader from winds, watch out and counter attacks from other teams, hang back to guide the team leader back to the peleton if the leader crashes or suffers a mechanical breakdown, and even give their bike to the leader. The job of the domestique is all about sacrifice.

What’s been your biggest sacrifice?
When’s the last time you rode a bike?
Have you ever ridden a bike naked?

I have no so my sacrifices have been very meagre and largely tokenistic. I last rode a bike about ten years ago and I've yet to experience the joys of naked cycling.

My prediction for this Tour de France is for Chris Froome to win. Nairo Quintana, Vincenzo Nibali and Romain Bardet will finish second, third and fourth respectively. Sorry Alberto Contador but your time is up!

Give me a break Spunky....the footie isn't over yet....nor is Wimbledon and your blogging about the Tour de France!!!!

Don't know what my greatest sacrifice was...looking back it seems the things I felt were huge sacrifices at the time didn't really matter in the end.

I've never been able to balance on a bike lol....clothed or naked!!!

Bonjour Spunky

I started watching men's & women's tennis, swimming & diving, and tour d'Italia and Tour de France back in the 80's when I was pursuing being a sports journalist. All the guys wanted (American) football, baseball, and basketball. A few guys would watch soccer, so I educated myself on the other sports.

I enjoy the Tour de France, but mostly just to see the scenery of France, especially the alpine areas. I don't think I would do much naked cycling, too hard on the balls. But it would be fun to watch the ladies do it, especially the rear views.

Funny women are incredibly sexy!

What’s been your biggest sacrifice?
It's painful. When I divorced my ex I had to recognize that my dogs were better off staying on the country estate that my wife was winning in the divorce. I had to say goodbye to them.

When’s the last time you rode a bike?
I reckon it's been six or seven years, but it won't be long before I get back on one. A new bike trail was just constructed right across the street from my house.

Have you ever ridden a bike naked?
Nude biking is a spectator sport.

I have a hard time seeing bicycling as a sport. Here in the midwest there are folks who cycle for pleasure, and I suppose some of them compete. But for most folks around here a bike has always been for getting where you want to go after you've lost your driver's license due to your third drunk driving conviction or the finance company repossessed your car. You'd go out to the garage and get that old bike down out of the rafters, patch and pump up the tires ( sorry- tyres) strap a milk crate to the front end with a bungy cord and away you'd go, rain or shine. The liquor store might be a couple of miles away but with a bike you could make short work of that distance! And the ride home was gonna be more pleasant even if it started snowing.

I see these city people all decked out in bright colors looking like a fucking rolling music video extra, with that bizarre corrugated, belted on beanie all perched on top a three thousand dollar bicycle, bent way down til their asses are higher than their heads and I want to snigger. What I see when I observe that is a hell of a lot of money that might have been better spent on beer and strippers.

I think England has embraced the Tour de France; the crowds are amazing when the Tour comes here. We may have voted to leave the EU but that doesn't mean we've left Europe!

Tour de blah, blah, blah, blah... here we go again... What is it with you and this stuff! I am only here as a loyal and supportive friend, even though I couldn't give a rip about the tour de boring.

What’s been your biggest sacrifice? I wonder if I've made it yet?
When’s the last time you rode a bike? perhaps fifteen years ago
Have you ever ridden a bike naked? what do you think!

This weekend we are celebrating our independence from tyrants! Last night I was in Philly at the water front at Penn's Landing, listening to the Army Band and watching fireworks on the Delaware River. Just by dumb luck the barge with the fireworks was positioned nearly in front of us; next year I will try to go to the very same spot! Tonight there are fireworks here in Washington Township, NJ and tomorrow there will be more at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I am thinking of taking the train back into the city to watch them. I've never been to the July 4th celebration at the art museum before.

Here is a photo of the River Stage at the Great Plaza on Penn's Landing. I left my camera at home this year; I wish I hadn't because we were much closer than this, nearly at the water's edge!
When I first watched Le Tour de France, I thought it was boring too. I just couldn't get round the idea that it's about one cyclist pedalling faster than another.
But when I found out that the cyclist who goes out first will never win because they use far more energy than those following in their slipstream I got hooked!
The Tour is all about cooperation and ultimately breaking a pact to compete for victory!

Saying goodbye to loved pets in a relationship split is hard.
Cycling is increasingly popular here; my local authority is building cycle lanes all over the place. With its trams and pedestrianised streets, Nottingham is getting like Amsterdam but without the coffee shops!
